James Salter (born James Arnold Horowitz; June 10, 1925 – June 19, 2015) was an American novelist, short story writer, poet, screenwriter, and movie director. He was active between 1957 and 2013. His most noted novels were The Hunters (1957) and A Sport and a Pastime (1967).

His father, a former West Pointer, convinced him to attend the military institute, from which he graduated in 1945. James Salter was born in 1925 in New York City. He entered West Point in 1942 where he trained as a pilot, eventually to serve twelve years in the Air Force, the last six as a fighter pilot. He received an MA from Georgetown University in 1950. In 1957, he left his military career to pursue writing full time.
